Bell Co. grand jury indicts 3 from Harlan

Three Harlan County residents have been named in separate indictments returned by a Bell County Grand Jury.

Ashley N. Burkhart, 27, of Evarts, was indicted on the charge theft by deception over $300 and five counts of theft by deception under $300.

According to the indictment, Burkhart made several stolen checks payable to Save-A-Lot. One of the checks was in the amount of $308.65, while the others were made under $300. The charges stem from August 2008.

Tony Lee Taylor, 54, of Baxter, was indicted on a charge of first-degree trafficking a controlled substance.

Tony Ray Taylor, 32, of Wallins, was named in an indictment charging him with first-degree trafficking a controlled substance.

A man indicted on a first-degree drug charge pleaded guilty in Bell Circuit Court on Friday. Mark Edward Stephens, 37, of Coldiron, pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree trafficking a controlled substance. Stephens was indicted on the drug charge approximately eight months ago.

Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Tara Pope recommended two years and six months in the penitentiary on the charge. The final sentencing for Stephens was set for April 15.
