A bicycling event is planned by the Harlan County Recreation Board for this fall. Shooting for the first week of October, the board plans to host a ride to the top of Black Mountain.
“What we’re going to do right now, if it doesn’t change, is we’re going to have a ride, do T-shirts and maybe dinner. If it doesn’t change, it’s going to start around (the former) Cumberland High School… It’s going to be a ride to the top of Black Mountain and back down,” said board member Ronnie Shoope.
This will be a ride of approximately 30 miles, according to Shoope.
“We’re going to have something that nobody else has in this state,” said Shoope. “The ride to the top of Black Mountain and back — the tallest peak in the state.”
The board is considering the entrance fee and what sort of merchandising to do.
“We might get 300 riders,” said Shoope.
The board is looking into getting cameras installed at the Black Mountain Thunder Park in Evarts in order to give participants the option of purchasing photos of their adventure.
“I was looking for a zip line permit,” said Crider. “Right in the middle of that stack… was a letter from Fotaflo with a $5 bill and a handwritten letter that said they were going to give us $5 for five minutes of our time.”
Crider said Fotaflo has a system to generate income through taking photos of people riding the zipline and making the photos available for purchase.
According to Crider, Fotaflo is offering a discounted package.
“You get six Fotaflo cameras preloaded with proprietary software. They’re $450 apiece,” said Crider. “You get a laptop that costs $600. You get a 22-inch monitoring screen for a slide show for $200.”
The package also come with a printer, cases for transporting the equipment, paper appropriate for printing pictures and other assorted equipment, license fees, software and hardware.
Crider said Fotaflo shows the total cost of all items included in the package at about $12,000.
“The deal is, he says, he’ll share the cost,” said Crider. “It will cost us $3,500. We pay $3,500 up front and we start making money off the pictures.”
Crider said another option would be to let Fotaflo keep all profits until the $3,500 is paid.
Crider said the Fotaflo system is in use by several outdoor recreation facilities, including the Red River Gorge.
After some discussion concerning the details of the offer, the board passed a motion to begin negotiations with Fotaflo.
