Boggs took in 59.9 percent of the vote with 2,048 votes while Johnson received 36.5 percent with 1,246 votes. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Timothy Jason Jackson, who dropped out of the race weeks before the election, collected 125 votes.
After the results were tallied, Boggs thanked his supporters for the victory.
“I only cast one vote today. All the other votes came from the people of Harlan County,” stated Boggs. “I appreciate that from the bottom of my heart. They heard my message that I was a candidate of change — that I was a candidate with 25 years experience born and raised here in Harlan. I worked right here in that office at 108 South First Street for 25 years. I can do this job, and I’m ready to do it. I can’t wait until January.”
Johnson congratulated Boggs on his victory.
“Obviously I’m disappointed. I had hoped to have another term in office, but the 20 years I have had as Commonwealth Attorney have been great. It’s been very satisfying and rewarding. I felt like I accomplished a lot while I was in the office,” said Johnson. “I wish my successor Parker Boggs a great success in the office in his term. I want to thank all of my supporters who I know put in a lot of work and supported me in a wonderful way. I appreciate them all very much.”
There is no opposition for Boggs in the general election in November at this time.
