The Evarts Tourism Commission discussed plans of the for their annual Evarts Labor Day Festival during a meeting on Monday.

During the meeting, commission members discussed plans to have live music during the festival.

City Clerk Kristi Lamb pointed out an option used at another area festival.

“When they had the Polk Sallet Festival, they did Harlan Idol where they had people come up and sing throughout the day and people voted on them over a three or four day period,” said Lamb. “We could also get some local talent — some of the younger kids and do the same thing.”

The commission also discussed the possibility of using local bands and a DJ.

A motion was made and passed to spend a total of $900 for live music for the festival.

The Evarts Labor Day Festival with be Sept. 1 from noon until 10 p.m. in downtown Evarts. The festival will feature live music, food and crafts.

In other commission action, members discussed placing a sign at the intersection of U.S. 119 and U.S. 421. The proposed sign, advertising the city and surrounding attractions, will cost approximately $600 with an additional installation cost of $100.

Lamb explained to the commission the new sign will be an upgrade from the sign that is currently at that location.

“It’s got Black Mountain Thunder Zipline, it’s got the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area and it says Evarts with an arrow pointing in that direction,” said Lamb. “I like the colors of it and as soon as people come off the road they’re going to see it.”

Commission member Henry Shackleford gave his assessment of the installation costs.

“The sign that’s there has been down there for six or seven years,” said Shackleford. “For $100 to put it up — it’s a deal.

A motion was made and passed to accept the sign.
