An Enterprise Staff Report

A Fairview man was killed Wednesday after a fire ravaged his home.

The New Year's Eve tragedy claimed the life of William E. Jones Sr., 79, who was a World War II Navy veteran.

"From all indications, he lived alone," said Harlan County Coroner Philip Bianchi. "He was found in the bathroom area of the house. The apparent cause of death was smoke inhalation."

Harlan City Police officer Bill Howard said the fire occurred around 9:30 p.m. He was called to the scene for traffic control along with officer Jayson Howard.

"There was mainly smoke and heat when I arrived on the scene," Howard said. "The Harlan City Fire Department was already there. The structure was left standing, but there was considerable damage."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
