Taking advantage of the beautiful weather on Thursday, friends Bill Helton (left), of Loyall, and Delmar Cole, of Gate City, Va., checked the parachute lines on Helton’s Buckeye motorized powerchute before taking to the air at the Tucker-Guthrie Memorial Airport at Baxter.

Not a plane and not a hang glider, the powerchute is considered one of the safest aircrafts in the world. Helton can be seen racing down the runway before becoming airborne.

Once in the air, Helton said he can stay airborne up to three hours and can climb to 10,800 feet and as low as 500 feet off the ground. Both Helton and Cole said they are retired and have taken up powerchuting as a hobby. This was Helton’s third flight and Cole’s fifth flight since learning the new sport.
