If you enjoyed the movie “Surviving Guthrie,” by hometown boy Jesse Harris, you’ll enjoy even more a visit with the female star of the show, Jessie Rose Pennington. She’ll be in Harlan and Cumberland on April 25-26, performing with Georgetown College’s newest musical theatre organization, Lyric Theatre Society. Performing along with her will be hometown faces Haley Howard and Ryland Pope, among a host of other Georgetown College students whose passion is theatre, music and the combined dramatis of musical theatre and opera.

The first show is slated for 7:30 p.m at the SKCTC Harlan Campus Auditorium on April 25. The second show opens with a singing and drama workshop for children ages 7-18, to be held in the Godbey Appalachian Center on the SKCTC Cumberland Campus, beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26. This workshop will be followed by a performance of the Lyric Theatre Society, beginning at 1 p.m. Pre-registration for the workshop is required and can be made by calling 573-4994. Admission to both performances will be $10 for adults, with no charge for students.

The daughter of J.P. Pennington of the band Exile, Jesse’s family is no stranger to Harlan County, her father’s band having played in our area numerous times. Featured of late in the Georgetown College musical “She Loves Me,” Jesse shared the stage with Ryland Pope and Haley Howard, both graduates of Harlan High School. Songs and staging from many musical works will be featured in this showcase of the Lyric Theatre Society: “Ragtime,” “Bye Bye Birdie,” “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “The Old Maid and the Thief,” “Little Women,” “Les Miserables,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Carousel” and “The Secret Garden.” Under the direction of Dr. Heather Hunnicutt, professor of Music at Georgetown College and a graduate of Indiana University School of Music, the show is a delight to behold, and inspiring to all who share a love of musical theatre and its power to inspire and motivate toward higher goals.
