Motorcyclists from around the county will be riding for a good cause this weekend as they participate in the second annual Harlan County High School Band Bike Run.

Katina Hendrix, the vice president of the HCHS band boosters, said between 30 and 35 riders participated in last year’s event and added that she expects a large turnout once again this year.

“We had a lot of people to come out and ride, and we also had several people to just donate,” Hendrix said.

The Harlan County High School Band bike run is scheduled for Saturday, with registration at noon and the ride beginning at 1 p.m. The registration fee for the event is $20, and those who pre-register will receive a free T-shirt. All proceeds generated from the event will benefit the Harlan County High School band.

Hendrix said the funds generated from the ride play a vital role in financially providing for the band.

“We don’t get a lot of funding, so basically anything the kids need, besides the uniforms the school provides, will come out of this money that we raise,” she said.

The ride will begin at the Harlan County High School parking lot and will proceed down U.S. 119, to U.S. 421 across Pine Mountain to KY 221 to Pineville with a stop scheduled at Happy Mart. The riders will return via U.S. 119 to the Shriners Horse Park in Putney. Riders will be served dinner at the end of the ride. Additional rider meals are available for $3 and will be sold at the registration table. Door prizes will also be awarded.

The Harlan County drumline will perform from noon until 1 p.m. during registration.

For additional information about the event, contact Hendrix at 837-9004, or Pam Middleton at 573-3340.

“We would like to encourage everyone to come out. We want this ride to be an annual event that can keep going as a good fundraiser for the band,” said Hendrix.
