JENKINS — Larry Maggard knows what his Jenkins Cavaliers have to do to become a competitive program, and the first-year head coach can point to the Harlan Green Dragons as an example.

Harlan demonstrated the physical style of play that Maggard hopes to eventually duplicate, rolling up 376 yards on the ground behind a big, strong and experienced offensive line to roll past the host Cavaliers 58-22 on Friday and clinch second place in District 7 of Class A and a home playoff game.

“They just dominated the line of scrimmage. They probably averaged seven to 12 yards a carry, and that’s just the weightroom and off-season workouts right there,” Maggard said. “That just shows our young team what you can do when you work hard in the off-season.”

Senior tailback Andrew Link had another big game for Harlan (5-4 overall, 2-1 district), rushing for 192 yards and four touchdowns despite sitting out most of the second half.

“Taking nothing away from Jenkins, but I think our kids kind of overlooked them, probably more on defense than anything else,” Harlan coach J.B. Donahue said. “Our offensive line played pretty well, and I’m tickled we got some young kids in the game and was able to give them some carries and touches. I saw a lot of progress from some of our young kids tonight.”

Austin Wolfe, the Dragons’ senior kicker, also had a big game with a 24-yard field goal plus seven extra points and two touchbacks.

“Austin is a good hard-working kid who gets better every day,” Donahue said. “He had a great night tonight. He has become a weapon, and we like to give him chances to kick some field goals.”

Jenkins (1-8 overall, 0-3 district) did all of its damage through the air as senior quarterback Matt Gross completed six of 12 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

Gross connected with Ryan Bentley for a 72-yard scoring strike in the first quarter and an 85-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. He teamed with Nick Taylor for a 30-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

“They hit a couple of long passes, including two when we had a lot of subs out there,” Donahue said. “I felt they had offensive pass interference on one, but we gave up a couple of long balls.

“We had our first unit out there on the first one. They got in the special formation we rehearsed all week. We had kids who didn’t do what they were taught to do.”

Harlan set the tone for the night on its opening drive, marching 52 yards in six plays. Link went the final 18 yards for a touchdown with 9:19 to play in the first quarter.

Jenkins briefly took the lead when Bentley caught a Gross pass near the sideline and broke free for a 72-yard scoring play. Gross added the two-point conversion as the Cavaliers led 8-7 with 8:01 left in the first quarter.

With Link ripping off runs of 21, 10 and 11 yards, the Dragons wasted no time answering. Link capped the five-play drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. Link was stopped inches short on the two-point conversion attempt and the Dragons led 13-8 with 5:40 to play in the first quarter.

Harlan went 59 yards in seven plays in a drive that extended into the second quarter to build its advantage to 20-8 on Link’s 6-yard run with 9:10 to play in the first half.

Link scored on a 7-yard run with 6:10 left in the second quarter, two plays after Eric Robinson dropped Gross for a 21-yard loss on the Jenkins 10 after he recovered the ball on a high snap while lining up for a punt.

Freshman running back Ryan Jones and senior fullback Kenny Pennington each had long runs as Harlan drove inside the Jenkins 10. Wolfe hit a 24-yard field goal with 19 seconds left in the second quarter as Harlan’s lead grew to 30-8.

Long runs by Ben Cornett and Link set up Pennington’s 1-yard touchdown run with 8:45 left in the third quarter.

The Harlan reserves took over at that point, and Alex Blas and Cody Logan each had runs for first downs before Jones went the final 4 yards for a touchdown with 4:20 left in the third quarter.

Gross and Taylor teamed up for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 1:10 to play in the quarter, and Gross added the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 44-16.

A pair of freshmen, quarterback Ty Saragas and running back/receiver Dakota Morris, teamed up for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 8:20 left in the game.

Bentley caught another touchdown pass from Gross, this one covering 85 yards with 4:03 to play, to close the scoring for Jenkins.

A long kickoff return to Robinson set up Harlan’s last touchdown drive, which featured a 25-yard run by Blas. The Dragons’ sophomore tailback scored two plays later on a 6-yard run with 2:15 to play. Blas finished with 87 yards on 14 carries.

Harlan closes its regular season schedule Friday at home against Knox Central before playing host to Paintsville on Nov. 6 in the first round of the playoffs.
