Andrew Saylor drove in five runs with a triple and a double to lead Harlan’s explosive offense. Cody Brewer doubled three times and had a single, while scoring three runs. Noah Busroe contributed four singles and drove in four batters while scoring twice. Cameron Carmical added three singles. Jared Sizemore and Austin Fee each had RBI doubles. Austin Wilson contributed a single while driving in a run.
Harlan raced to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Brewer, Busroe and Gage Burkhart were brought home by Saylor’s triple. Saylor later scored on a double by Sizemore.
North Laurel countered in the bottom of the inning when Jack Capobianco hit a lead-off double. Three batters later, Shane Caudill had an RBI single to drive in Brian Gray. Caudill later scored on a fielder’s choice.
North Laurel held Harlan scoreless in the top of the second and added another run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Weston Greibel.
North Laurel scored four runs in the third inning to take an 8-4 lead, capitalizing on two Harlan errors and an RBI double by Gray.
Harlan fought back in the fourth to tie the game at 8-8 as Carmical, Brewer and Rhett Alred were brought home with a hit by Busroe. Busroe later scored on a single up the middle by Wilson.
After holding North Laurel scoreless in the fourth inning, Harlan added five runs in the top of the fifth to take a decisive 13-8 lead. Brewer, Busroe, Burkhart and Sammy Moore all scored to open the inning. Saylor later scored on a double by Fee.
“Our kids started hitting the ball real well in the fourth and fifth innings,” Harlan coach Shelby Wilson said. “We got our heads down for an inning but bounced back and played a good ball game. I was real proud of them for that.”
Saylor earned the win for Harlan, pitching 3 1/3 of no-hit baseball. Saylor finished with four strikeouts while walking five. Jared Sizemore started on the mound for Harlan, allowing eight runs and six hits while striking out two in 2 2/3 innings.
With the win, Harlan advances to play Hazard-Perry County in the second round of the losers bracket at 6 p.m. today.
