The Harlan Lady Dragons fell at Cumberland Gap, Tenn. in Tuesday’s season opener. The Lady Panthers pulled away in the late innings for a 9-3 victory over Harlan.
Cumberland Gap took an early lead with one run in the first inning. After three scoreless innings, the Lady Panthers took control with a five-run fifth inning. Cumberland Gap tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Harlan made a late comeback attempt with three runs in the seventh inning.
Senior Heather Holland started the offense with a walk. Holland then stole second and scored on an outfield single by Alyssa Mills. Kaylee McNiel reached on a throwing error to first. Madison Noe then drove in Mills and McNiel with a double to right-center field.
Noe had a double and a single to power Harlan at the plate. Torri Mitchell recorded a double, while Mills and Anna Karst each added a single.
Noe recorded five strikeouts, while scattering eight hits i the complete game loss on the mound.
Harlan (0-1) will travel to Jenkins today. The Lady Dragons will open the home schedule Saturday against Williamsburg.
