Candidates vying for state offices will be in town Wednesday, presenting their platforms and meeting Harlan County voters.

A forum will be set up at the Harlan campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College which will give candidates in the 87th and 94th Kentucky House District races an opportunity to answer questions pertaining to Harlan County issues.

“This forum will be open to the public,” said Roy Silver, a steering committee member of Harlan County Leadership United, the group which is organizing Wednesday's forum. “It will offer an opportunity to hear candidates in the state representatives races to answer questions posed by their fellow citizens.”

Students from this year's Leadership Academy class have met and created the questions that will be asked during Wednesday's forum. Leadership students will also ask the questions to each of the candidates, who will get three minutes to respond. Each will then be allowed a one minute rebuttal.

Candidates in the 87th Kentucky House District race will speak at 9:30 a.m. The only candidate who has confirmed his participation is (D) Rick Nelson.

At 10:30 a.m., candidates in the 94th Kentucky House District race will speak. Those candidates include (D) Leslie Combs and (R) Howard Cornett.

“The Leadership Academy is comprised of people from different parts of Harlan County who all have different perspectives on current issues,” Silver said. “This went a long way in coming up with their questions. We had a list of questions, then met and fine-tuned that list, which will be presented Wednesday during the forum.”

Harlan County Leadership United is a seven-year old academy which trains local residents to become effective leaders within their communities. Day-long workshops are held once a month for about a year on issues such as government, health, education, the economy as well as the environment.

Wednesday's political forum will be videotaped for rebroadcast on Southeast Television for viewing by voters, and will also be made available to Harlan Cable Television.

The forum will take place in the conference room of the Harlan campus.
