More than a hundred children gathered at the Harlan Public Library recently for the Superhero Unite Program hosted by Youth Services Librarian Sarah Stone. Children came in capes and masks, dressed as their favorite super heroes, for a day of fun and laughter.
Stone said the purpose of the event was to inspire children to visit their local libraries to check out books and read.
“The Harlan Independent Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) donated the refreshments and Elizabeth Lewis, from the Artist Attic did all the backdrop painting for the event,” said Stone. “Books were also donated by FRYSC on preventing child abuse.”
Brenda Johnson, parent educator for FRYSC at Harlan Independent Schools said an organization named Community Collaboration for Children, offers many grants around the state to assist in putting on events during April to highlight child abuse prevention month.
“This event was planned in conjunction with the Harlan Public Library’s Superhero Unite Program and the Department for Community Based Services to help provide the kids with fun and point out ways people can help prevent child abuse,” said Johnson.
To report child abuse you may call the statewide Child Abuse Report Hot line 24 hours per day seven days per week at 1-877-597-2331. For other states you may call 1-800-422-4453.
During the program, FRYSC members presented several packets of books about preventing child abuse to each of the three libraries in the county, along with Cumberland River Comprehensive Care’s children services program, the Harlan Boys and Girls Club and the Department for Community Based Services in Harlan. Stone read superhero books to the children and creative activities were available for the children to participate in.
“The program was a huge success,” said Stone. “I think most of all the children really enjoyed meeting Batman, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Wonder Woman and the Black Widow. Hopefully, they were all inspired to read more books.”
