The Evarts Wildcats responded from a season-opening loss with a 38-28 win at Middlesboro in seventh- and eighth-grade football action.

Jake Bush started the scoring for the Wildcats with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Baird.

Jake Napier and Lamar Burkhart each added a pair of touchdown runs. Napier scored on runs of 15 and 30 yards and Burkhart scored on runs of 40 and 5 yards. Burkhart had three two-point conversions. Napier added one.

Baird and Burkhart, the Cats’ inside linebackers, led the Evarts defense in the win.

Evarts (1-1) will play host to WIlliamsburg on Thursday.

The Evarts fifth- and sixth-grade team was scheduled to play host to Mountain View on Thursday, but Mountain View reportedly did not show up for the game.

Black Mountain (4-0) to a 63-17 win over visiting James A. Cawood in seventh- and eighth-grade basketball action Thursday.

Makayla Pace scored10 and Rebecca Middleton added 10 to lead Black Mountain (4-0).

Noah Canady scored seven to pace the Trojanettes.

Black Mountain returns to action Monday at Wallins. James A. Cawood will play host to Cumberland on Monday.

Whitney Wilson’s 11 points led Wallins to a 23-19 win in the fifth- and sixth-grade contest.

Hannah Johnson powered the Lady Skins with 10 points.
