Locals claim top SEKC hoops honors

The 2012 All-SEKC basketball awards were recently handed out and the local teams were well represented.

Harlan County was the big winner in the conference claiming five of the top six awards. Both the Bears and Lady Bears split the conference championship with Clay County. Harlan County’s Mike Jones was named the boys coach of the year, and Anthony Nolan was selected as the girls coach of the year.

Junior Tyler Brewer received the top player honor as he was named the boys player of the year. Joining Brewer on the All-SEKC team were five additional Black Bears including Aaron Caldwell, Chase Calton, Chad Massingill, Tyler Miller and Alex Sergent.

Harlan’s Chris Begley and David Allen were also named to the team.

Harlan County placed five players on the All-SEKC girls team, with Kalee Carroll, Miranda Davenport, Sarah Evans, Brooklyn Massingill and Kaitlyn Stittums each making the squad. Keisha Mimes and Lauren Lee were also named SEKC honorable mentions.

Harlan had four players on the team, including Ashley Mullins, Madison Ball, Gabrielle Rehnborg and Jourdan Ledford.

Clay County’s Alisha Mitchell was named the girls player of the year.

The All-SEKC boys team includes: Bell County - Tanner Lefevers, Ryan Cox, Kylee Lee and Tyler Potter; Clay County - Zach McGeorge, Tyler McDaniel, Kodi Reed, Stephon Lyttle and Zac Kemp; Corbin - Travis Smith, Kyle West, Zach Farley and Robbie Igo; Harlan County - Tyler Brewer, Tyler Miller, Aaron Caldwell, Chase Calton, Chad Massingill and Alex Sergent; Harlan - Chris Begley and David Allen; Knox Central - Johnathan Barger, Matthew Barger, T.J. Kelly and Tobie Merida; Lynn Camp - Chase Turner and Eric Jones; Middlesboro - Cameron Rancher and Michael Wilson; Pineville - John Simpson and Byron David Asher; Williamsburg - Jared Barton and Cameron Smoak.

The All-SEKC girls team includes: Bell County - Maci Morris, Morgan Garnett, Jessica Sanders and Paige Robbins; Clay County - Alisha Mitchell, Cheyenne Madden, Morgan Chesnut, TaLaura Mathis, Sabrina Smith and Sarah Robinson; Corbin - Miranda Wilson, Kayla Wilson and Karlie Blackburn; Harlan County - Miranda Davenport, Kalee Carroll, Sarah Evans, Brooklyn Massingill and Kaitlyn Stittims; Harlan - Madison Ball, Jourdan Ledford, Ashley Mullins and Gabrielle Rehnborg; Knox Central - Shakira Gregory, Jenna Mills and Cassi Shippy; Lynn Camp - Kayla Smith and Heather Wilson; Middlesboro - Ashley Mason and Anajae Stephney; Pineville - Rebekah Brooks and Devin Enix; Williamsburg - Carissa Conlin and Megan Lawson.
