An incident involving two men and a shovel has resulted in one man being jailed on charges including assault. Harold Johnson, 36, of Cumberland, was arrested Wednesday by Cumberland Police Sgt. Silas Whitehead after he allegedly hit another man in the face with a shovel.
According to the citation, Johnson hit Sam Gaines in the face with a metal shovel causing injuries to Gaines. Whitehead arrived on Central Street in Cumberland and discovered Johnson carrying the shovel and walking toward Gaines. The citation states Johnson was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and his speech was slurred. Whitehead placed Johnson under arrest. While being transported, Johnson began cursing officers and kicking the vehicle door while the vehicle was moving down U.S. 119.
The citation stated Johnson was tazed when he began kicking at Whitehead.
Johnson was charged with second-degree assault on a police officer, first-degree disorderly conduct, alcohol intoxication in a public place and resisting arrest.
Johnson was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center and placed on a $10,000 full cash bond.
In other police activity, Kentucky State Police Trooper James Earl Hensley arrested Robert Lee Jones, 20, of Baxter, Wednesday. Jones was wanted as a fugitive from another state. Jones was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center without bond.
