If you think they’re not around anymore, you’re wrong, one was found in Jones Creek on Wednesday — a moonshine still that is.

Officers with the Governor’s Marijuana Eradication Task/Strike Force located a moonshine still and several marijuana plants on a tract of land in Jones Creek. Whether the still was a “working one” or not has not been released by the police yet, but the looks of it was like a step back in time, as if something you’ve seen on the Andy Griffith Show.

The practice of making moonshine dates back to the late 1700s, when the government imposed an excise tax on whiskey, which prompted the Scots-Irish settlers to revolt in 1794. It is commonly called moonshine, or just “shine” and this clear, potent liquor is most often called “white lightning” because of its kick.

The task force has been flying around the county in helicopters for several months scoping out the areas where marijuana is growing.

While at the scene the police didn’t find any drinkable moonshine around the still, but they did find several marijuana plants on the property that were cut and confiscated.

A bomb squad was also called in because of some possible explosive devices allegedly found on the property. Several Post 10 troopers and detectives also assisted at the scene.

Look for a follow-up story in Friday’s edition of the Enterprise for a report on the task force’s findings and any pending charges or arrests.
