N. Katherine Small, 76, Evarts, died Oct. 29, 2006, at Harlan ARH Hospital.

A native of Cornettsville, she had lived in Harlan County most of her life. In addition to being a mother, she was a homemaker. She had also worked as a nurse's aid in Virginia. She loved life and wanted everyone around her to be as happy as she was.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Flora Pence Nolan and Oscar Nolan; a daughter, Brenda Louetta Small; a son, Samuel Oliver Small; and two brothers: Boone Nolan and Bill Nolan.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Luther Henry Small, Evarts; three daughters: Ima Priscilla Johnson and husband, Curtis, English, Ind.; Wanda Howard, Wallins; and Rosemary Hamm and husband, Phillip, Baxter; two sisters: Audrey Faye Harrison, Pineville; and Janice Dotson and husband, Sam, Ohio; a special nephew that was like a son to her, Gary Cook, Ages; 16 grandchildren: Brittany, Renae, Felicia and Curtis Johnson II; Barbara Lynn and Samuel Oliver Small Jr.; Kevin Luther, Travis Lee, Kara Michele and William Dallas Howard III; Alvin, Alex, Tiffany and Phillip Hamm Jr.; and Christopher and Ralph Morgan Jr.; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Evarts Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Evarts Funeral Home with the Rev. Roland “Bo” Lee and the Rev. James Boggs officiating.

Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Evarts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
