Plans finalized for Harlan County Christmas Parade

During the regular monthly meeting of the Harlan Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday an update was given on the annual Harlan County Christmas Parade, which will be Dec. 1 in downtown Harlan.

Lineup for the parade begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Harlan Baptist Church and the parade begins at 6 p.m. An alternate date for the parade will be Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. with lineup beginning at 12:30 p.m.

This year’s theme is “Candy Canes and Christmas Carols.”

The parade is sponsored by the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce, the Harlan Daily Enterprise and the Harlan Tourist and Convention Commission, in cooperation with the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, the city of Harlan and the Kentucky National Guard.

Prizes will be awarded for Best Children’s Float, first and second place; Best Religious Float, first and second place; Best Theme; Chamber of Commerce Award; Harlan Daily Enterprise Award; Best Scouting Group, first and second place; and Grand Prize Winner.

Activities are also being planned beginning at 1 p.m. at the Harlan Center. Children will be able to enter contests and win prizes. A gingerbread house competition will be held with cash prizes awarded. Children will be able to have their pictures taken with Santa Claus. A hands-on art project will be available for kids to participate in, which will later be placed in the Artists Attic.

In other action the chamber:

*Heard that Lindsey Wilson College will hold their 2012 pinning ceremony on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Godbey Appalachian Center. Dr. Bruce Ayers will be honored during the evening recognizing the 10-year partnership between Lindsey Wilson College and SKCTC;

*Recognized Anne Hensley, Harlan ARH Hospital revenue cycle manager and chamber board member, on her recent win to serve on the Harlan City Council;

*Held the election for 2013 officers. Elected were: President Aimee Blanton, vice-president Kimberly Brown, secretary Ron Frazier, treasurer Sharon Doan, new board members Enam Chowdhury and Cathryn Forester and reappointed to the board was Anne Hensley;

*Learned Leadership Harlan County United will hold their graduation ceremony tonight at 6 p.m. at the Benham School House Inn. There will be 11 graduates.
