A caravan of RVs converged on Harlan County recently. They called themselves the Ky Horse Shu Kru and they camped out for several days in the Harlan Center parking lot.
The Ky Horse Shu Kru is a Lexington chapter of the Bluegrass Family Motor Car Association (FMCA). This group of retired and not-so-retired people get together and travel all over the United States.
“We were greeted by a band when we arrived in Harlan, first time this ever happened to us,” said Pat Ireland, President of the chapter. The Harlan High School band members were practicing in a field nearby when they arrived.
“This is a wonderful group of people, we get together once a month, and just talk, laugh, eat and have fun together,” said Dawn Nunez, local member.
According to Ireland the group has representation from all over the state, including Harlan. She said that members did not have to be retired to join.
“We have become another family to each other. We do lots of different things by hitting the highlights of every place we go. We are excited about being in Harlan and plan to tour the portal in Lynch while we are here,” said Ireland.
Ireland went on to say that the group travels during the months of April through October. During the winter months of November through March, they meet in alternating homes and have potluck. She stated that they just love being together, sharing good times and wonderful memories that they have made along the way in their travels.
The group was entertained with music provided by Lonnie Milwee while they were in Harlan.
“This has just been wonderful here in Harlan and we plan to come back, bring our grandchildren next time.” Ireland commented.
