Sheriffs’ tourney slated for Saturday

The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring a one-day basketball tournament at Harlan County High School on Saturday to raise money for the Kentucky Sheriff’s Boys and Girls Ranch.

The seventh and eighth grade boys Tip-Off Classic will begin at 8 a.m., and will be a seven-team, single elimination tournament.

Sheriff Marvin Lipfird said they plan to send 25 girls and 25 boys from Harlan County to the ranch in Gilbertsville during June or July. The age groups is between 9 and 12.

The sheriff and his officers will be visiting schools in the county to recruit children to attend the camp.

Lipfird said the purpose of the Boys and Girls Ranch is to build the children’s self-esteem, moral character and to teach them respect for themselves, others and law enforcement professionals.

“Everyone needs to come out and support the kids, and it will it give you a chance to see the new Harlan County School if you haven’t got to see it yet,” Lipfird said.

Admission for the games is $3 for adults and $1 for students.

Lipfird said shirts will be for sale and a concession stand will be available.

The tournament schedule includes: James A. Cawood vs Wallins at 8 a.m., Evarts vs Cumberland at 9:10 a.m., Green Hills vs Rosspoint at 10:20 a.m. Black Mountain will face the winner of the James A. Cawood/Wallins game at 11:30 a.m., with the other semifinal game scheduled for 12:40 p.m. The consolation game is slated for 1:50 p.m. with the championship game scheduled at 3 p.m.
