FRANKFORT — State Senate President David L. Williams (R-Burkesville) has appointed State Senator Brandon Smith (R-Hazard) as chairman of the Natural Resources and Energy Committee.

“Senator Smith has a tremendous knowledge and understanding of the issues that face the energy industry in our state. His chairmanship bodes well for a realistic discussion on Kentucky’s place in America’s energy future,” Senator Williams stated.

The chairmanship of this committee marks a first for Senator Smith as chairman. Previously, he had served as vice-chairman of the Natural Resources and Energy Committee. The committee deals with matters pertaining to forestry; mining; fish and wildlife resources; soil and water conservation; flood control and water usage, drainage, and irrigation; geology and water resources; waterways and dams; oil, gas, and salt water wells; water pollution; noise pollution; air pollution; protection of the environment; management of waste; the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet; privately owned public utilities; rates, permits, and certifications of convenience and necessity; water district rates; utilities in cities; public utility cooperatives; electric and gas utilities and cooperatives; oil and gas transmission companies; telephone companies and cooperatives; municipal utilities and water works; energy and fuel development; energy waste disposal; the Public Service Commission; solar and other renewable energy; hydroelectric and thermonuclear energy; and gasohol and other alternative fuels.

“I am excited for this new opportunity. I intend to continue emphasizing a well-planned development of the coal industry so that we as a state can take our rightful place as a responsible and formidable energy producer,” Smith said.

His new position has also gained positive attention by industry leaders.

“As a life-long resident of Eastern Kentucky, Chairman Smith understands the value of Kentucky coal to the thousands of hard-working miners and their families but also to the businesses and communities across the commonwealth that depend on our low electricity rates,” Charles Baird, the Chairman of the Coal Operators and Associates explained.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for early December.
