A native of West Virginia, he had resided in Harlan most of his life. He was a retired custodian for the Harlan County Health Department and a member of both the D.A.V. and the V.F.W. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and believed in the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Evans and Geraldine Daniels Evans; one son, Ralph Evans; one daughter, Barbara Evans; and two sisters: Mattie Kyle Evans and Viola Tollie Evans.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Mazyek Evans, Harlan; one son, Robert Earl Evans, San Diego, Calif.; three step-children: Mary Helen Carter, San Diego, Calif.; Keith McDowell, Orange County, Calif.; and Kenneth McDowell, Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Charles Evans, Lexington; 13 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation is Friday from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. at the Harlan Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery with Elder Donald Renfro officiating.
Military rites will be performed by the Harlan County Honor Guard.
The Honor Guard will also serve as pallbearers.
