FRANKFORT — Chosen by his fellow lawmakers to lead the 2013 and 2014 General Assembly, House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, took the oath of office Wednesday and was sworn in as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. This marks the beginning of Stumbo’s third term as leader of the 100-member chamber. Stumbo remains the first and only Eastern Kentuckian to lead the House of Representatives.
“I am honored that my fellow legislators have chosen me to lead our chamber and I am humbled by the trust that they have placed in me,” said Stumbo. “The House of Representatives has always been ‘the people’s house’ and I will work hard every day to make sure the people of Kentucky remain our only priority. Over the next two years, I look forward to working with my friends on both sides of the aisle to do all we can for our constituents, Kentucky families and the Commonwealth as a whole.”
The election of Stumbo to the post marks another milestone in a long career of public service to Kentucky. A veteran of the Kentucky House of Representatives, Stumbo first came to Frankfort in 1980 and quickly gained a reputation as a fierce advocate for the improvement of Kentucky’s education system and a reliable voice for consumers, children and working families.
Stumbo rose to become the youngest house majority floor leader in the nation, a position he held for 18 years. In addition to serving the citizens of his native Floyd County, Stumbo also held statewide elected office as Kentucky’s 49th Attorney General from 2003 through 2007 where he was recognized for his work to crack down on Internet pharmacies shipping illegal narcotics into Kentucky and to strengthen protections against Internet predators.
“I have never taken the responsibility of leadership lightly,” Speaker Stumbo said. “There is no doubt that Kentucky is facing a number of challenges, some new and some we’ve been battling for years. But the House of Representatives and its members are ready to tackle these issues and work to move our Commonwealth forward.”
A graduate of the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, Stumbo previously served as Assistant Floyd County Attorney and held the position of Martin City Attorney for three years. He also served as Trial Commissioner to the Floyd County District Court for one year.
At home, Stumbo enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and is also a private pilot who has flown for more than 20 years. He has three children — Morgan, Brooks, and Kassidy — and is married to the former Mary Karen Henderson.
