To clarify a recent action taken in a Harlan Independent Board of Education meeting, the Director of Special Education IDEA teacher position was once again declared to be a district position to be filled by Superintendent David Johnson at a recent special called meeting of the board. Board Chairman Joe Meadors said Kim Allison will retire from that position at the end of June.

Meadors said as Director of Special Education, Allison worked part-time in central office and part-time in the classroom with Special Education children.

“We’d already taken the action, but David didn’t feel like we’d made it plain enough that it was a districtwide job and he will fill the position,” said Meadors. “If it’s not a districtwide job then the site-based councils are responsible for the hiring. We just clarified one of our previous actions. It’s the way it has always been. Nothing has changed — just a clarification.”

Bids were approved for the 2012-2013 school year, which included bids for software, copier paper, fire alarms services, pest control services, general insurance, custodial supplies, audit services, propane gas, diesel heating and bus fuel, office instructional and library supplies. The board will re-bid maintenance supplies, the yearbook bid and student insurance.

During the meeting, the board also took action to approve a request from the Kentucky State Police for use of their football field facilities.

“Each post evidently has an annual physical fitness test their troopers must pass,” said Meadors. “The request asked to use the football field track and weight room facility for their physical fitness test on Oct. 9-10. The request said there will be 41 troopers taking the test.”

Other items approved by the board include:

*A resolution to employ attorneys Chenoweth Law Office;

* Memorandum of agreements with Eastern Kentucky University for math transition courses;

* Bond of depository, reports, bills for payment and meeting minutes;

* Comprehensive District Improvement Plan and assurances.
