LONDON - It took a little over three quarters for the Cawood Trojans' shots from the perimeter to begin falling, just in time to salvage a win Wednesday in the consolation bracket of the Hoopin' It Up Holiday Classic at North Laurel.

With the Trojans trailing Chattanooga (Tenn.) Notre Dame by seven early in the fourth quarter, Adam Rhymer completed a three-point play, then Ryan Farmer followed with a 3-pointer, the first of the afternoon for Cawood after nine misses. Josh Caldwell capped the 8-0 run with a basket at the 6:08 mark to put the Trojans ahead.

The lead changed hands several times down the stretch before Cawood took control in overtime to win 56-52.

Rhymer scored 26 and Farmer added 11 to pace the Trojans.

The all-senior starting lineup for Notre Dame (6-4) was led by center Chris Harr with 13 and forwards Andrew Jezewski and Chauncey Thompson with 11 and 10, respectively.

Cawood (3-5) will meet Knox Central today at 4:45 with the winner to play Friday at 3 p.m. for seventh place in the 16-team tournament being played at both North Laurel and South Laurel.

The Trojans struggled offensively through the first three quarters against their Tennessee opponents, shooting 31 percent from the field as the Cawood big men battled foul problems and the Cawood guards battled to find the range on open shots against the Notre Dame zone.

“Ryan and Adam both made some big plays in crucial situations,” Cawood coach Anthony Nolan said. “With Josh in foul trouble, it took a lot of our inside presence away, so those kids had to make some big plays.

“Ryan played with a lot more confidence tonight as opposed to last night, and Adam is starting to get his rhythm back after being out a game.”

Cawood built a 10-6 lead after a sluggish first quarter that included 10 misses in 13 attempts from the field by the Trojans. Junior forward Brad Howard provided a lift off the bench, scoring the final four points of the period.

“We didn't have a lot of emotion early, and Brad gave us a spark,” Nolan said.

The Trojans' lead grew to seven early in the second quarter on back-to-back baskets by Rhymer, but the patient Fighting Irish fought back to take a 22-20 lead at the break as Cawood could manage only two baskets over the final six minutes of the half.

Cawood's offense went from bad to worse in the third quarter as the Notre Dame lead alternated between four and six points during the period as the Trojans hit only three of 11 shots from the field. The Irish led 34-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Farmer and Rhymer caught fire in the fourth quarter, each hitting three shots as Cawood fought back to take the lead. Farmer's basket with 19 seconds left put the Trojans up by two. The Trojans needed only a rebound to win in regulation, but Notre Dame's Harr came up with a miss and scored to tie the game at 49-49 with three seconds left. Farmer's shot from halfcourt was off the mark.

After Farmer and Jezewski traded baskets in overtime, Jezewski hit one of two at the line to put the Irish up by one with 2:22 left.

A 3-pointer from the baseline by Rhymer proved to be the biggest shot of the game. Thompson missed twice at the line for the Irish with 57 seconds left, allowing Farmer to push Cawood's lead to four with a pair of free throws 17 seconds later.

The Irish shot over 50 percent in regulation (19 of 37) but missed nine of 10 shots in overtime.

Notre Dame coach Jesse Nayadley said his players are having trouble with more physical style of play in Kentucky.

“We just didn't adjust like we needed to,” he said. “We're used to shooting 20 to 25 free throws a game back home, but those aren't fouls here. That's not to take anything from Cawood, because the calls were consistent both ways.

“I think this will make us better down the road, which is what we're here for.”
