Members of the Evarts Tourist and Convention Commission recently held a dedication ceremony at their newly constructed Coal Miner’s Memorial. Designed by Mayor Eddie Manning, the memorial was constructed by Matthew Hughes, pictured at right, of Hughes Custom Tiles in Evarts. Others helping with the construction were: Harlan attorney Otis Doan, who donated the flag poles; Rep. Rick Nelson, who donated the Kentucky state flag; Harlan Honor Guard, who donated the American flag; Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board, who donated the coal car; Rex Coal, who donated coal for the coal car; and Evarts Funeral Home, which donated wood for the project. Pictured from left are tourism members Henry Shackleford, Tony Aslinger, Roger Webb, Tina Couch and Janice Napier.
