As we begin 2013, we also begin the start of the new 113th Congress. On Jan. 3, I was sworn in to represent the fine people of the 5th Congressional District of Kentucky for another two years. It is an honor and privilege to be given this opportunity, and I am looking forward to continuing my work of reining in Washington spending, helping Kentuckians find work, keeping taxes low for working families, leading the fight against prescription drug abuse, and getting our nation’s finances back on the right track. While many challenges lie ahead this year, I remain committed to helping improve our region and working with Congress to ensure a bright, secure, and prosperous future for America.

NEWS ON THE HILL

On New Year’s Day, the House of Representatives approved the McConnell-Biden revenue agreement that will save nearly all Kentuckians from an immediate and devastating tax hike, including a 20 percent increase in the death tax. The deal also prevents a massive cut to family physicians performing Medicare services in areas like southern and eastern Kentucky.

On Jan. 2, the President signed this bipartisan legislation into law. Like many Americans, I was disappointed spending cuts were not included in the final package, putting in further jeopardy the long-term viability of Social Security and Medicare. The White House simply refuses to tackle our nation’s overspending, address our $16 trillion national debt, and make tough decisions to sustain these important programs.

I’m committed to holding the President to his promise for a “balanced” approach on fiscal matters, not just more taxes. As we begin the 113th Congress, our focus must now turn to enacting meaningful reforms and cutting spending, while making targeted investments in our nation’s infrastructure, reviving our domestic coal and energy sector and supporting our military families and veterans.

DISTRICT NEWS

The 5th Congressional District has a new layout this year and I want to officially welcome Boyd, Carter, Elliott and Lincoln counties to the region I serve. On my website, you’ll find each new county has been added to my interactive district map. It’s a great resource for contacts, news articles related to each county, and projects across the region.

On Jan.21, the 57th Presidential Inauguration will take place in Washington, DC and I am so proud that the Letcher County Central High School Marching Band, led by band director Dr. Jason Griffith, will be performing in the parade and at the Bluegrass Ball. It’s a great honor and I look forward to seeing these talented musicians from the mountains performing on the Capitol grounds.
