The Harlan Lady Dragons picked up a potentially momentum-building win on Monday, knocking off defending 51st District champion Knox Central 54-46.
“It was a good win. To go on road get a win like that was good,” said Harlan coach Derrick Akal.
Torri Mitchell had four points in the first quarter as the Lady Dragons went up 9-6.
Senior Kelly Cox took over from the perimeter in the second quarter. Cox drained three treys in the period to push the lead to nine at the half. Cox finished with four 3-pointers and 18 points in the win.
“Kelly is getting her rhythm back. We moved her to the one and that has helped a lot. She is getting the ball in her hands more. She shot the ball well and that always helps,” Akal said.
The Lady Dragons limited Knox Central to just three made shots in the first half as they went into the break with a 22-13 advantage.
“Throughout the year, we have played pretty good halfcourt defense. The problem has been rebounding after we get a stop and we did a better job of that tonight,” said Akal.
Cox, Jourdan Ledford, Jordan Brock and Masie Charles each had a 3-pointer in the third quarter as Harlan took a 42-34 lead into the final period.
Ledford hit all four of her free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to help keep the Lady Dragons in front. The junior guard finished with 12 points in the contest.
Knox Central (12-13) will host Jackson County on Thursday. Harlan (11-13) closes out the regular season Feb. 15 at home against Corbin.
