Evarts improved to 7-0 in fifth- and sixth-grade football action with a 14-6 victory over South Laurel on Saturday.
The game was scoreless until late in the third quarter when Christian Jones raced 65 yards for a touchdown.
Evarts fumbled on its own 15 in the fourth quarter and South Laurel scored with a minute left. Jones, playing middle linebacker, made the tackle on the two-point conversion attempt to send the game to overtime.
Brendan Osborne scored on a 10-yard run on the first play of overtime. Osborne also added the two-point conversion.
Ends Christian Boggs and Trent Smith sacked the South Laurel quarterback on third down to push the Cardinals back beyond the 20. Boggs pressured the quarterback on fourth down and Layne Jones made the tackle at the 10 after a short completion.
Chrisitan Jones led the Evarts offense with 121 yards on 13 carries. Osborne added 105 yards on eight carries. Jordan Steele had 15 yards on three carries and quarterback Josh Burkhart added 12 yards on two carries.
Christian Jones also led the defense with eight tackles. Jarrett McKenzie added six. Osborne, Steele and Kobe Burkhart had four each. Layne Jones had a fumble recovery and two tackles.
Evarts returns to action Thursday at Pennington Gap, Va.
Dalton Johnson scored two touchdowns, one on offense and one on defense, as New Harlan defeated North Laurel 22-8.
Josh Turner started the scoring for the fifth- and sixth-grade Patriots with a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Johnson rumbled 20 yards for a score in the second quarter, then added the two-point conversion.
After stripping the ball away from the North Laurel quarterback, Johnson returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. Johnson also added the two-point conversion.
North Laurel scored in the fourth quarter.
New Harlan (5-2) travels to Knox County on Thursday.
Harlan routed Pennington, Va. 52-0 in fifth- and sixth-grade football action on Saturday.
Troy Barton returned the opening kickoff for a 70-yard touchdown. Barton also returned an interception 60-yards for a touchdown. Kilian Ledford scored two touchdowns on runs of 60- and 70-yards. Alex Mills scored a 20-yard touchdown. Bitty Foster scored a 30-yard touchdown and Patrick Bynum scored a 50-yard touchdown.
Brady Brock added two two-point conversions. Andrew Noah added one two-point conversion. James Harris had two two-point conversions.
Jake Wilson led the Dragons’ defense with seven tackles. Garrett Begley added six tackles. Alex Mills had five tackles. Dominik Davis had four tackles.

Black Mountain claimed a 44-11 win over Green Hills in the fourth-fifth- and sixth-grade game. Alyssa Cochran powered the 2-9 Tigerettes with 10 points. Alyssa Cornett added nine.
Lydia Caballero paced Green Hills (0-8) with five points.
Black Mountain travels to James A. Cawood on Thursday. Green Hills plays host to Cumberland.
