The posting of 911 numbers on homes throughout the county was a topic of discussion during a recent meeting of the Harlan Fiscal Court. Magistrate David Kennedy said he is getting numerous reports the numbers are not being posted to assist emergency personnel.

“The court has brought this up several times and the ambulance people can’t find these people when they call,” said Kennedy. “We voted to have people post these numbers on their homes. Marvin (Lipfird), do you think your sheriff’s department could start going from house to house. We’ve brought this up numerous times and it has been put in the paper, but people are still not doing this. Could you and David McGill come up with a plan to solve this?”

Harlan County Emergency Management Director David McGill said he will send out a mass message on the county’s CodeRED system telling residents they must post their 911 numbers on their homes. He said the numbers must be at least three inches tall and legible on their homes.

McGill said this is a county ordinance and “must be done.”

In other action the court:

*Accepted two roads into the county road system in Jesse’s Creek at Coldiron — Stallard Drive and Victoria Lane;

*Approved the appointment of LeeAnn Turner and Robert Landis to serve on the Harlan County Cooperative Extension Service Board of Directors retroactive to Jan. 1;

*Approved to advertise for diesel fuel/gasoline, autopsy transportation, road/bridge materials (ready-mix concrete, metal culvert tile, steel rebar and galvanized coated gabion baskets);

* Approved a Task Order Agreement between the Kentucky Department of Highways and the Harlan County Fiscal Court for 562.5 linear feet of guardrail for cribbing at the Harlan County maintenance lot at a cost of $821.25;

*Approved an agreement between the fiscal court and KCEOC Community Action Partnership to open a Senior Citizens Center in the library area at the Verda facility;

*Accepted, subject to audit, the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office statement of receipts, disbursements and excess fees for 2012;

*Asked for an itemized statement before paying a $72,534.68 bill to Eastern Well Drilling for heating and air conditioning work at the Harlan County Detention Center;

*Set the next fiscal court meeting for Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. in the old circuit courtroom at the Harlan County Courthouse.

The court went into executive session according to KRS 61.810 (1) (c) and returned with no action taken.
