Harlan County High School standout distance runner David Lee signed to join the Lindsey Wilson College men’s track & field and cross country teams recently.
Lee quickly emerged as one of the top cross country runners in the region capturing the Region 7, Area 9 and SEKC championships, in his first season in the sport.
“When I first started out I didn’t think I would have that much potential. I knew I was a good runner, but to win those meets builds your confidence,” Lee said.
Lee competed at the Kentucky State Track Meet last season where he turned in a pair of top-20 finishes.
“David is just incredible about accepting a challenge. Knowing his personality, I look for him to really take off at Lindsey Wilson. He doesn’t like to run behind anyone,” said Harlan County cross country coach Ryan Vitatoe.
David finished 19th in the 800-meter run with a time of two minutes and 10.5 seconds and 20th in the 1,600 after crossing the finish line in 4:49.52. His time in the 1,600 was a personal season best.
Prior to the state competition, Lee impressed at the Seventh Region meet, where he turned in a pair of second-place finishes in the same two events.
Lee’s regional 800 time was 2:11.24 with a time of 4:52.29 in the 1,600.
Lee was a three time qualifier for the Kentucky State Track Meet.
“I thought he had the potential to be really good as a freshman,” Vitatoe said. “He is just full of potential.”
