Man arrested for allegedly assaulting his mother
by Joe P. Asher
Staff Writer

A Friday morning incident involving a man and his mother has resulted in multiple charges, including assault. Harlan City Police Cpl. Jeff Owens arrested Ashton Britt, aka Chris Britt, 20, of Harlan, after he and Harlan City Police Officer Will Pope responded to a domestic complaint.

“We received a complaint of a domestic in progress at apartment 204 at Buttermore Apartments,” said Owens. “Upon arrival we went into the apartment and located Tina Britt. She was laying in the floor bleeding from a laceration in her head and possibly having a broken arm. We called an ambulance right away.”

According to Owens, other law enforcement arrived quickly.

“Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Bailey — he’s an EMT — advised her arm was possibly broken,” said Owens.

Owens said Tina Britt advised that she and Ashton Britt had gotten into an argument that turned physical.

“Tina Britt is Ashton Britt’s mother,” said Owens. “She advised that… he had taken a CD player stereo and was striking her with the stereo. The stereo pieces were laying around the scene. All that was collected and taken into evidence.”

“He (Ashton Britt) had fled the scene when he heard officers coming,” said Owens. “We scattered around the area to look for Ashton Britt.”

Owens said Chief Deputy Winston Yeary of the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Justin Luttrell had joined the search at this point.

According to Owens, a neighbor told Yeary that Ashton Britt was hiding on the roof.

“We went up on the roof and deputy Yeary located him hiding underneath a ladder,” said Owens. “He (Ashton Britt) advised he had gotten into an altercation with his mother, and he advised he had struck her with a stereo player.”

Owens said Ashton Britt advised that his mother (Tina Britt) was kicking him out of the apartment and he lost his temper and hit her with the stereo.

Tina Britt was transported by LifeCare Ambulance Service to Harlan ARH Hospital to be treated for possible broken bones and lacerations, according to Owens.

Ashton Britt was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center and charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot), menacing and second-degree assault (domestic violence).

In other police activity:

* John Barnett, 44, of McRoberts, was arrested on Thursday and charged with theft by deception including cold checks $10,000 or more and theft by unlawful taking $10,000 or more;

* Rebecca Turner, 37, of Bledsoe, was arrested Thursday by the Office of Probation and Parole for parole violation (for felony offense). Turner was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
