The Corbin Redhounds put a damper on Harlan’s Senior Night festivities Friday, downing the Green Dragons 82-51 in the regular season finale.
There wasn’t much defense played in the first quarter, as the team’s combined for 44 points in the opening period. Senior Dakota Morris led seven Green Dragons scorers with six points in the opening period, while Kevin Goins came off the bench to pace Corbin with five. The Green Dragons trailed by six late in the period, but Leighton Piper and Caleb Hogue closed the period with back-to-back baskets to make it 23-21.
The Redhounds continued to score seemingly at will in the second quarter, as the Green Dragons struggled to keep pace. Goins and Kaleb Maguet combined for 16 points in the second as the Hounds pushed their lead to 46-32 at the half. Harlan trailed by just four when senior David Allen went down with a head injury. Allen remained on the floor for several minutes before being taken off on a stretcher. The Dragons were unable to recover from the situation, and Corbin closed the half on a 13-3 run to take control.
“I think the wind went out our sails when David Allen got hurt. After that every thing was down hill. We quit playing with the intensity and the fire that we started with. We quit rebounding and we quit making shot,” said Harlan coach David Parks.
Corbin continued to extend its lead in the third quarter. Seven Redhounds combined for 22 more points in the third quarter as the lead ballooned to 29 points. Meanwhile, the Dragons managed only two baskets on the opposite end, falling behind 68-39.
Both teams substituted heavily in the fourth quarter as the Hounds continued to cruise.
“It seemed like it was one mistake after another. We play well in spurts, but we haven’t been able to maintain anything. Not to make excuses, but that is youth, that’s inexperience, that’s playing a good basketball team. All of those things figure in,” Parks said. “For us to have success we have almost zero margin for error. We have to do things well all the time.”
Harlan (9-19) will face Harlan County in the first round of the 52nd District Tournament on Monday at 7 p.m.
Corbin (22-6) returns to action Monday in the opening round of the 50th District Tournament against Williamsburg.
