The Kentucky State Police arrested an Evarts man on Friday for his alleged involvement in the recent robbery and assault of Kelley Smith on U.S. 119 at Wallins Creek over a week ago.
Trooper Jared Boggs arrested Timothy Hughes, 24, on charges of second-degree assault, theft by unlawful taking of auto and first-degree robbery.
In a previous report on July 24, KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said according to the alleged victim, Kelley Smith, two white males walked into the middle of the roadway in front of him while he was driving toward Harlan on U.S.119. One of the individuals entered into the passenger seat and demanded Smith drive to Longton Road and stop the vehicle. Smith was assaulted and ordered to exit the vehicle after being threatened with a knife.
Kentucky State Police troopers are still looking for the stolen vehicle, a Gray 2006 4-door Nissan Altima, with the Friends of Coal tag number 9635DM.
Jacobs said the only description Smith could give was two white males, wearing T-shirts and shorts.
Smith was transported by vehicle to Harlan ARH Hospital to be treated his injuries.
Hughes has been lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center with no bond set.
Very few details are being released by KSP while the investigation is ongoing.
KSP Det. Kenny Abner assisted with the arrest.
