“The Betrayal,” a one act play, will be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the Pathfork Holiness Church. This play is based on the King James Version of the Bible and is annually performed the night before Easter Sunday.
Directed and designed by New York theatre veteran Derrick Moore, of Pathfork, the production follows Jesus’ heartbreaking preparations to offer himself, coinciding with Judas’ deceitful plan to betray him.
The play begins with a touching scene of Jesus’ feet being anointed by the woman with the Alabaster Box, who dries her tears from his feet with her own hair. The story continues with a depiction of The Last Supper, when Jesus reveals to his disciples “one of you will betray me this night,” and follows him to his prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane, where an Angel appears to strengthen him.
This year’s finale will conclude with a brand new scene, the arrest of Jesus after Judas betrays him with a kiss.
“It was always my goal to take the story as far as possible,” said Moore. “I’m really excited for our audience to watch the arrest scene. More time has been invested in the costumes and over all design of the temple guards who arrest him than any others we have done — from their weapons, stage torches and spears.”
Moore said the helmets used in the arrest scene were actually used in the Oliver Stone film Alexander.
“I feel like being accurate to history helps the word of God really come to life,” said Moore. “I’m most eager for the moment when Jesus heals the servant Malchus after Peter cuts off his ear in retaliation. Having Jesus perform a miracle just moments before being led away in chains — what a beautiful a moment to be able to stage. After performing this miracle, his own disciples flee leaving him to face his accusers alone. It reminds me of how great the responsibility is in re-creating these scenes.”
Moore said everyone is welcome.
The production is for all ages.
Admission is free and the production lasts approximately one hour.
