Helping laid off miners

Nola Sizemore

Staff Writer

Looking for ways to help laid off coal miners in the county, the Harlan County Bass Anglers gave away 120 turkeys on Saturday in the Don’s Super Saver parking lot.

“We started this because some of our members had family laid off from the mines. Now, we even have some of our members who are laid off,” said president Johnny Ray. “We decided to raise some money and try to do something for our coal miners. So, we held a fishing tournament on Sept. 8 at Norris Lake and through that event and help from Alpha Coal, James River Coal, Jim Roddy Trucking, Don’s Super Saver, R&D Trucking, Herman and Nelson Trucking, Tri-State Truck Parts, Tri-State Mining Cable, B&D Mine Supply, Short Circuitz, Logans Roadhouse, Bianchi Funeral Homes, Wallpaper Outlet and 119 Buy, Sell and Trade we were able to purchase 120 turkeys to give to our laid off coal miners for their Christmas dinner.”

Ray said, “There are a lot of people in Harlan County who really need help right now. When we handed these coal miners a turkey and saw the looks on their faces, and heard their words of gratitude it made it all worthwhile. It makes us happy to make someone else happy. It’s a season for giving and we’re giving what we can to help. During the event, we heard so many say their unemployment checks are fixing to get cut off and it just breaks your heart. We just want to help in any way we can.”

Ray said his organization also helps the Harlan County Humane Society and Cumberland River Comprehensive Care Center throughout the year through fishing tournaments where they raise funds to assist these organizations.

“We do a big fishing tournament at Martins Fork Lake in May, Mental Health Awareness month, every year for Comprehensive Care,” said Ray. “This year it’s supposed to be bigger and better than ever.”

Ray said the Bass Anglers are willing to help any charitable organizations with tournaments.

He said for more information you may Facebook the Harlan County Bass Anglers and leave a message or you may call Ray at 606-573-9922 or 909-5421.

You may also contact the organization by mail at P.O. Box 262, Grays Knob. KY 40829.
