Recreation Board plans trail maintenance

The Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board is planning maintenance work on the access trail that connects the Harlan County Campground to the ATV park.

The board heard from Kenneth Foster, a representative of the campground, during a meeting held this week.

According to Foster, the access trail is in need of maintenance.

“We can tell you this, you’re next on the list,” said board chairman Dallas Gilbert. “The only thing that’s kept us out of there is rain.”

Foster said he has heard complaints from campground guests concerning rocks making the trail difficult to use.

“There’s only so much dirt up there that we can cover it with,” said board member Ken Crider. “If you put it out while we’re getting all this rain then it washes out, and there’s no fixing it.”

Foster pointed out the rocks could be a safety issue.

“I don’t want anybody getting hurt and I want them to come back for Harlan County,” said Foster.

Board member Tracy Bailey asked if the rocks could be hauled off.

“We’ll roll them out of the way when we can,” said Gilbert. “At the same time, if you start pushing that rock on this wet dirt then you’re going to have a big old ditch. Then you got to fill the ditch up. Right now, we’re sitting idle.”

According to board member Ronnie Shoope, it may take several days of good weather before the trails can be worked on without causing damage.

“If we get two days without rain, we’ll be there,” Gilbert told Foster.

The board also heard from Ryan O’Grady, president of FotaFlo. The board has contracted with the company to provide guests who ride the zipline action photos of their experience.

O’Grady said everything is set up and it’s now time for the board to take over.

“I’ve led you to water, and it’s time for you to drink,” said O’Grady. “Everything you need to be successful has been implemented. Technically, the system is ready to go.”

O’Grady said the park staff has been trained in the use and sales aspects of the system.

“There’s no reason why you guys can’t be wildly successful with it,” said O’Grady.

In other activity:

* The board continued planning the upcoming Southern Shine Crawl, an annual event that takes place on Memorial Day Weekend;

* A motion was passed granting permission for pony rides at the Southern Shine Crawl event.
