Harlan County senior Jacob Cornett capped a stellar high school golfing career with a victory at the Tri-County Conference Championship recently at Wasioto Winds Golf Course in Pineville.
Cornett turned in a 1-under 35 to tie Middlesboro’s Eric Francis, before defeating Francis on the first playoff hole.
The tournament victory gave Cornett four points, enough to tie Middlesboro’s Michael Wilson for Tri-County Conference Player of the Year honors.
After much deliberation between the coaches of both players, as well as the players themselves, they realized it was too dark to play and the players were declared Co-Players of the Year.
Middlesboro won the tournament with a team score of 162. Barbourville finnished second with a score of 164. Harlan County tied Knox Central at 170. Bell County finished in fifth place and was followed by Harlan and Pineville.
Cornett’s 35 led the Black Bears. Nick Early shot a 42. Cody Brewer turned in a round of 46. Jacob Dixon carded a 47, and Joey Eldridge had a round of 53.
Sam Moore led the Green Dragons with a 47. Leighton Piper shot a 56. Cody Shoupe carded a 57. Logan Murray had 65, and Aaron Simpson withdrew.
