The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a local market owner for allegedly selling synthetic cannabinoid.

Daniel Neff, 52, of Cawood, was arrested on Monday and charged with trafficking synthetic cannabinoid.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, deputies obtained a search warrant after synthetic cannabinoid was purchased during an undercover buy at the Cawood Market. The Cawood Market is owned by Neff. Deputies executed the search warrant and located 12 packages of synthetic cannabinoid and $1,149 in cash. While deputies were in the process of executing the search, Neff received a package delivered by Fed Ex, which contained 115 containers of Smoking Dragon potpourri, which is a substance believed to be a synthetic cannabinoid. An additional $1,160 in money orders were seized, which was going to pay for the shipment that arrived.

Sheriff Marvin Lipfird explained, “If people are going to continue to sell synthetic cannabinoid, or any narcotic, we will continue to arrest them and put them in jail.”

Chief Deputy Winston Yeary is lead investigator in the case. Yeary was assisted at the scene by Lipfird, Det. Danny Ball, Capt. Frank Doan, deputy James Davis, and chaplain Bill Ball.

Neff was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond.

In other police action:

The sheriff’s office, along with the Cumberland Police Department removed several marijuana plants from the Blair area.

According to a press release, authorities responded to the Coldiron Branch area of Blair in response to an anonymous complaint of marijuana being cultivated in the area.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Miron Southerland, deputies Matt Cope and Danny Lewis, along with Cumberland Police Officers Jason Blanton and Cody Williamson conducted a search of the area around an abandoned house and surrounding mountainside. The search produced 18 marijuana plants varying in size from 4 feet to 8 feet.

The sheriff’s office may have a lead on who was growing the marijuana, but no arrests had been made by press time.
