The first meeting of the “Neighborhood Watch Program” recently took place in the meeting hall of Evarts United Methodist Church for the Evarts and Clover Fork areas. Over 30 community members attended the meeting. Harlan County Sheriff Marvin Lipfird along with deputies presented a PowerPoint presentation. Three officers from the Evarts Police Department and Magistrate Bill Moore were also in attendance. Committee members were elected.
The main point of this program is to reduce crime rate, provide a better quality of life, have a greater sense of security, responsibility and provide law enforcement officers with volunteer support year round.
Preston McLain was elected Watch Coordinator. Block captains elected include: Johnny McGill — Middleton Addition; Rick Stanton — South Evarts; North Evarts — B.J. Fee; Florida Addition — Janice Mayhan. Captains are working to contact anyone who would like to become a member.
All future meetings will be held at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the basement fellowship hall of Evarts United Methodist Church. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
