A father and son have been indicted following an alleged theft of mine equipment in December.
Charles Gibbons Sr., 63, of Loyall and Charles Gibbons Jr., 33, of Smith, were arrested on indictment warrants by Harlan City Police Sgt. George Young following a grand jury indictment that was handed down on March 18.
According to the indictments, both men were charged with theft by unlawful taking over $10,000.
The indictments, both witnessed by Harlan County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Winston Yeary, state that on or about Dec. 4 the two men stole mine equipment parts valued in excess of $10,000 belonging to Manalapan Mining Company.
The indictment of Charles Gibbons Jr. contains an additional count of being a persistent felony offender. The indictment states Charles Gibbons Jr. was previously sentenced in Harlan Circuit Court of felony offenses on July 28, 2000, Feb. 14, 2003, Aug. 8, 2003 and Jan. 23, 2004.
Charles Gibbons Jr. was arrested Friday and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on charges of theft by unlawful taking, persistent felony offender and two counts of defrauding a secured creditor. He is lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $20,000 full cash bond.
Charles Gibbons Sr. was arrested Monday on charges of theft by unlawful taking, defrauding a secured creditor and theft by deception including cold checks under $500. Gibbons Sr. was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $12,000 full cash bond.
In other police activity:
* Freeman Saylor, 41, of Evarts, was arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Rodney Sturgill on a charge of trafficking a controlled substance. Saylor was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond;
* Mark Seiber, 43, of Closplint, was arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Craig Miller on Sunday on charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid or assistance and fourth-degree assault. Seiber was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
