Staff Report
Kentucky State Police Det. Michael Cornett has arrested an Evarts man for his alleged connection in the death of Bruce M. Penix.
Cornett arrested Robert E. Curry, 39, at his residence on Tuesday. Curry has been charged with the murder.
Autopsy results show the cause of Penix’s death to be blunt force trauma to the head.
KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said in an earlier release that the state police received a call at 3:33 a.m. on Thursday in reference to an unresponsive male. Jacobs said upon their arrival, troopers discovered Penix, 47, of Kildav, deceased inside a residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Harlan County Deputy Coroner Jim Rich.
Shortly after arriving on the scene, troopers initially arrested Curry on charges of menacing, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was released from jail on Saturday after his bond was posted at 10 percent of $3,500.
Cornett was assisted at the scene by Harlan EMS, sergeants Jeremy Lee and Jackie Pickrell, troopers Rodney Sturgill and Kenny Sergent, and Evarts Police Chief Lupe Blas and officer John Teagle.
KSP Det. Kenny Abner, troopers Josh Howard, Brandon Burton and James Earl Hensley assisted Cornett in arresting Curry on Tuesday.
Curry was lodged in the Harlan County Detention center on a $500,000 full cash bond. He is scheduled for arraignment today.
