52nd District draw set for Saturday

The draw for both the 52nd District boys and girls tournaments will be held Saturday at Harlan High School, according to athletic director J.B. Donahue. Harlan will serve as the host for this year’s tournaments.

Harlan County (19-5 overall, 5-1 district) and Bell County (10-12 overall, 5-1 district) will flip for the top seed on the boys side. The Black Bears cruised to a 83-64 victory over the Bobcats at home in December, but the Bobcats upset Harlan County 56-54 on Log Mountain.

Harlan (8-16 overall, 1-5 district) and defending 52nd District champion Middlesboro (12-10 overall, 1-5 district) are tied for third place. The Green Dragons stunned Middlesboro 70-63 at home, but fell to the Jackets 64-51 last month.

The boys tournament will begin on Feb. 18, at 7 p.m., with the top-seeded team facing the fourth-place team. The second and third seeds will meet on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.The boys championship game is set for Feb. 21, at 7 p.m.

Harlan County (21-3 overall, 5-1 district) and Bell County (19-4 overall, 5-1 district) will also flip for the top spot in the girls tournament. The Lady Bears defeated Bell County 50-33 at home, but fell to the Lady Cats 52-47 in the rematch on the road.

Harlan (12-13 overall, 2-4 district) will claim the third seed. The Lady Dragons knocked off Middlesboro in both district meetings. Middlesboro (3-17 overall, 0-6 district) will be seeded fourth.

The girls tournament will start Feb. 20 with a double-header. The top seed will face Middlesboro, with the second-seed meeting Harlan. The girls title game is slated for Feb. 22.

The semifinal winners in both the boys and girls tournaments will advance to the 13th Region Tournament at Harlan County High School the following week.
