A small fire was put out before things got out of hand at Walmart on Monday. According to Harlan Assistant Fire Chief D.W. Baker, he noticed smoke during a routine trip to Walmart. “Coming in I saw a lot of smoke coming up from the back end of Walmart,” said Baker. “When I came over here to check there were two pallets of the cedar wood chips for dog lots that were actively burning. We got some pallet jacks and pulled them away from the building using seven fire extinguishers to try to control it.” Baker said once they got the pallets out into the parking lot, a hose from the fire truck was used to put the fire out. “There’s no structural damage, just the contents that were burning is all that was lost,” said Baker. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Harlan Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, Harlan County Emergency Management and the Harlan City Police.
