Crews from Eco Tech of London, a hazardous material removal company, work to clear the Harlan airport runway of an oil spill late Friday. A decision to use the runway at the airport runway as a drag strip turned costly for some area residents about 7 p.m. when one of the vehicles malfunctioned and discharged oil across approximately 300 feet of the runway, according to Harlan County Emergency Management Director David McGill. Due to the danger for incoming planes, the airport was closed for more than four hours as the crew worked to clean up the spill and help reduce the risk of planes hitting the oil and wrecking upon arrival. Kentucky State Police, HAZ-MAT Coordinator James Billings and officials of the airport board were still on the scene at about midnight. Kentucky State Police Trooper Josh Howard was the investigating officer. Several KSP units were on the scene earlier in the evening. According to statements at the scene those responsible for the spill will be assessed the cleanup fees and as well as for labor cost for emergency units required to remain on the scene.
