An Enterprise Staff Report

The Harlan Green Dragons have yet to pick up their first win of the young season, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been a few bright spots along the way. Harlan fell to 0-3 on the year with a 73-64 loss to Knox Central on Tuesday, but continued tom show signs of improvement against yet another 13th Region contender.

“We have to look for all positive things we are doing. We have to learn how to win and that will just take time,” said Harlan coach David Parks. “We have to emphasize all the thing we are doing well and work on the things we are not doing well daily in practice. We are going to get better.”

Sophomore Isaiah Johnson had seven points in the first half as Harlan stayed close with the visiting Panthers. The Green Dragons trailed by just two at the end of the first quarter and entered the half down 29-24.

However, Knox began to pull away in the third quarter. Matthew Barger and Chad Marsee combined to score 18 points in the third as the Panthers took control. Barger led Knox Central with 22 points, while Marsee added 18. Jeffrey Adams contributed 19 in the win.

“We just had a dead spot in third quarter and didn’t play very well,” Parks said. “You can’t have lapses in play against good teams.”

Harlan responded by outscoring the Panthers in the fourth quarter. The Dragons put up 25 points in the final period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 13-point deficit. Nathan Young turned in 13 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to lead the comeback effort.

“Nathan played really well. He shot extremely well and was extremely active. That is the best I have seen him play,” Parks said.

Harlan returns to action Thursday at home against Riverside Christian. Knox Central (3-0) will travel to Boyle County on Friday.
