The Harlan City Council appointed a new member to the Harlan Municipal Water Works Board during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday.
Mayor Danny Howard advised the council that John Jones, Philip Walters and Ken Bowling had been nominated for consideration by the council.
“Any of the three would be a good board member. They’re good people, and we’d be lucky to have them,” stated Howard.
The council voted in favor of Bowling, owner of Bowling Furniture. A motion was made and passed appointing Bowling to the water board.
Lt. James Billings of the Harlan Fire Department, filling in for Chief Linette Hutchison, advised the council the fire department has applied for a federal grant to purchase a new fire truck.
“Linette submitted a $750,000 grant application to the Assistance of Firefighters program for a new ladder truck,” said Billings. “Our ladder truck that currently serves the city is a 1967. It’s a little old. We need an upgrade.”
Billings pointed out that one of the requirements of the federal grant is that the truck be new. Used vehicles do not qualify for the grant.
Howard explained to the council there are some vehicles designated as surplus that are ready for bid.
“If you’ve noticed across the street, those are part of our surplus property vehicles. We have set Aug. 30 (as the bidding date) and we will be running an add advertising and encouraging people to come by. The bids will be open at noon. We’ll have the right to reject those bids. We know what the scrap value is. If they don’t offer us more than we can get to scrap it, we’ll hook the backhoe to it and off we go,” said Howard.
Howard pointed out that while there are mechanical problems with most of the vehicles, many of them can be put into running condition with some repair work.
In other council activity, Harlan Police Chief Mike Thomas informed the council the department will soon have two new officers on the street.
