Power board members appointed at Benham

The vacant chairs on the Benham Power Board have been filled. During a meeting Thursday, the Benham City Council appointed two new members to the board.

Mayor Shirley Dodd brought the subject up, reminding the council members Daniel Boggs and Margaret Jennings had both been mentioned as possible candidates.

Council member David Kidwell mentioned there had been some confusion at an earlier meeting regarding how many positions were open on the board and that had led to disagreement over who would be nominated.

“This is what we went through last month, but I didn’t know there were two (openings),” said Kidwell. “I wouldn’t have bucked on your nomination except I thought there was one.”

Motions were passed placing Boggs and Jennings on the power board.

Dodd informed the new members, who were in attendance, they would be sworn in immediately in order to attend a power board meeting the next day.

The council opened sealed offers on city property that had been put up for bid. The property included a 2007 Dodge Charger police cruiser and a late 1990s F 150 Ford truck, which the city had been using as a maintenance vehicle.

According to members of council, the Charger books for $12,000.

The bids were opened and read aloud for consideration. The bids for the Charger ranged from $4,550 to a low bid of $1,500.

The council rejected all bids on the Charger.

One bid in the amount of $600 was received on the Ford. The bid was also rejected.

The council then addressed insurance for city employees.

Three different quotes were received.

Kidwell said he was “passionate” about getting city employees insurance. Dodd said she wanted employees to have insurance as well, but the city had to find a way to pay for it.

“I don’t care what it takes,” said Kidwell. “There was a shooting in Lynch and we have a chief of police that was there and he has children, and he deserves insurance.”

According to Dodd and members of council, employee insurance will be high priority during upcoming budget workshops. No decision was made on the issue.

“These folks used to have insurance and it was taken away from them,” said Kidwell. ‘We’re lucky to have them and we need to do what we can do to keep them.”

In other council activity, the council tabled requesting a state audit until further research into the cost could be completed.
