A Wallins man was sentenced on charges including possession of a methamphetamine precursor in Harlan Circuit Court on Thursday. Wendell Jones, 32, was sentenced by Special Judge James Bowling to two years in prison.
Jones stood in front of Bowling with his attorney, James Wren II, to receive his sentence.
Previous reports state Jones was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a methamphetamine precursor following a knock and talk conducted by Kentucky State Police troopers Jared Boggs and Kevin Miller at a residence on Shoemaker Hollow in Baxter about one year ago.
According to Miller, Jones consented to a search of the home. During the search, police discovered several precursors to the manufacture of methamphetamine as well as a suspected one step methamphetamine lab.
Jones was sentenced at the state’s recommendation to a total of two years in prison on charges of unlawful possession of a methamphetamine precursor, wanton endangerment, and theft by unlawful taking of property over $500 but under $10,000. The two-year sentence will run consecutively with a sentence Jones is currently serving for a previous conviction.
Jones was sentenced during a scheduled motion hour which marked the first circuit court appearance as commonwealth’s attorney for Steven Parker Boggs. Boggs and assistant commonwealth’s attorneys Karen Davenport and Jonathon Lee were all present for the session. Boggs and his staff were sworn in on Jan 7.
In other court activity:
* Christopher Raleigh, 26, of Cumberland was sentenced to three years in prison on charges including burglary, criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools;
* Billy Baldwin, 36, of Cumberland, received two years in prison at the recommendation of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office on a charge of trafficking a controlled substance. Baldwin will be credited with time already served;
* Timothy Goins, 37, of Wallins, was sentenced to one year in prison on a charge of trafficking a controlled substance. Goins was credited with time already served.
